Tips to Living With Food Allergies

If you or someone you love has food allergies, you might already know how serious and frustrating it can be to live with true food allergies. Maybe you have even been hospitalized for your food allergies or you have to carry an Epi-pen with you at all times in case you have exposure and an extreme reaction.

If you do have allergies to food, however, you probably already know how difficult it can be to live in a society like ours with so many refined and packaged foods. It can be difficult to avoid the foods you are allergic to and still lead a somewhat normal life.

If you find yourself getting frustrated by food allergies, you are not alone. Here are some things you can do. First, it's important to learn to properly read food labels. Learning the read the labels will help you dramatically when it comes to avoiding the foods you are allergic to and still being able to enjoy good foods.

It is now also required by law that the packaging tell if a food contains one or more of the eight major allergens which include milk, eggs, fish, tree nuts, soy, wheat, peanuts, and crustaceans. However, it's still important not to depend solely on these labels to tell you what is in a food.

If you want to err on the side of caution, you will want to eat as many foods that are prepared yourself at home as possible. There is always a risk of cross-contamination as well but when you prepare and cook the food yourself, you can avoid this. It is possible to live with food allergies and enjoy the foods you eat. However, it may require some adjustments to your normal schedule and routine
